Victim punched in 'happy slapping' incident

AN ASSAULT on a 21-year-old man in the street was filmed on a mobile phone – a practice that has become known as “happy slapping”.

The man was left with a cut under the chin and a swollen cheek after the incident at the junction of St John’s Place, Canterbury, and Northgate.

As he was being punched the victim, who lives in the city, remembers seeing a man with the offender holding up a mobile phone which was lit up.

Police are currently looking at CCTV for the surrounding areas but have appealed for anyone with may have witnessed the assault between 2.30am and 3am on Sunday.

The offender is described as between 20 and 25, 5ft 10ins tall and wearing a light blue and white striped jumper and blue jeans. He had light brown, spiky, short hair.
