Trying to drive - or even walk - wearing beer goggles has graphically illustrated the dangers of drinking too much.

The device was among new equipment owned by Kent Trading Standards which was tested by Gazette editor Leo Whitlock.

He found that walking along a straight line on the floor became almost impossible.

He said: “I really couldn’t see the line, it was moving around all over the place; it was just really confusing.”

Leo admitted the goggles were a good educational tool.

“That’s a really good simulation of what it feels like if you get very drunk, how disorientated you feel and how you can easily lose your balance.”

Wearing the goggles behind the wheel of a driving simulator was just one exercise at a road show event launching the Canterbury branch of the Kent Community Alcohol Partnership (KCAP).

Members met at Chill nightclub in St George’s Place, Canterbury, to try out the gadgets.

Mark Rolfe from Kent Trading Standards has been charged with setting up KCAP in Canterbury.

He said: “The idea is to work with the trade, enforcement agencies and the local authorities to promote responsible drinking and reduce the access of alcohol to underage people.”
