Man arrested by Sainsbury's after supermarket staff 'assaulted' in Canterbury

A man has been arrested after a member of staff was reportedly assaulted near Sainsbury's in Canterbury.

The incident took place outside the supermarket in St Dunstan's Street just after 8pm yesterday.

Footage captured by eyewitness Charlie Harman shows the man being restrained by a member of the public, while those at the scene waited for police to arrive.

Mr Harman said: "The man got dump tackled by a guard onto some beer bottles, which smashed underneath him.

"Some member of the public jumped in while the man was restrained on the ground.

"The vigilante punched him thrice in the head extremely hard – it look pretty painful for all involved but especially the man, who was dump tackled right onto broken glass."

A police spokesman confirmed they attended the scene just after 8.15pm, after a report of an assault on a member of staff.

A spokesman said: "Officers attended and arrested a 28-year-old man from Ashford on suspicion of assault. He is currently in police custody."
