Homeless footballers across east Kent are dreaming of representing their country in Milan this year.
Twenty-four users of Porchlight are training hard in Canterbury twice a week in a bid to reach the England squad for this year’s Homeless World Cup.
The first set of trials for the national team take place at both Tottenham Hotspur and Charlton Athletic on February 4 and 5. Once through that stage, entrants will grace the same hallowed turf as Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo at Manchester United’s Old Trafford stadium.
“It’s a very big commitment for these people and I think it means a lot to them,” said Porchlight activities worker Richard Barnard.
"In terms of their excitement and their self-esteem building, by getting through things and being told often for the first time in their lives that they’re good at something, it really helps build them.
“But more importantly, it does change their lives.”
