CHRIST Church University’s vice-chancellor became the first in
Britain to be installed by the Archbishop of Canterbury on
Friday.
Professor Robin Baker was officially welcomed by the Rt Hon Dr
Rowan Williams at a unique Service of Installation at the
university’s chapel.
City bigwigs were out in force to watch the
ceremony, which was followed by a procession to Canterbury
Cathedral for a blessing from the Archbishop.
Hundreds turned out to witness the parade, which saw traffic
come to a standstill as it crossed Broad Street and entered the
cathedral precincts through the Queningate.
Professor Baker is Christ Church’s second vice-chancellor since
it gained university status in 2005, taking over from Michael
Wright last September.
His appointment followed an extensive career in cultural
diplomacy, holding a number of posts within the British Council,
including his final role as Deputy Director-General.
In accepting the post last year, he said: “I feel
very honoured to be appointed the next vice-chancellor of
Canterbury Christ Church University. It is a highly successful and
exciting institution deeply committed to the transforming power of
education.
“I look forward to building on the extraordinary achievement of
Michael Wright and to re-establishing my close connections with the
city of Canterbury and the county of Kent.”
