Waitrose says non-customers are free to use the car park at its Canterbury store - but warn new cameras will catch those abusing the privilege.
Cheeky motorists regularly use the site in St George's Place to go browsing elsewhere in the city as it offers a free 90-minute stay.
With the car park only sporadically patrolled by wardens, they are known to chance their luck and leave their vehicles for hours on end.
But supermarket bosses are now hoping to install four number plate reading cameras to ensure drivers do not overstay.
It says the proposals are not designed to deter non-customers from using the car park, but to ensure those shopping in the store can find a space.
Those overstaying will be hit with a ticket, but the amount of any fine has yet to be disclosed.
Waitrose spokesman James Armstrong says the cameras will help play a role in freeing up spaces during busy periods.
He said: "We will still provide 90 minutes free parking in our car park with no obligation to make a purchase from us if our application is approved.
"The new system is designed to ensure we continue to look after our customers who have found it difficult to find spaces because of the increasing pressure our car park has come under, especially during busy trading periods, while still providing free parking for other shoppers visiting the town."
A planning application for four cameras has been submitted to Canterbury City Council.
