A weather warning has been issued for Kent as the county is expected to be battered by winds of more than 50mph.

The Met Office has warned of travel disruption and some minor damage as it says a deep area of low pressure will impact parts of the UK on Saturday.

Forecasters say the yellow warning will come into force from 9am that day and end at 11.59pm.

“A deep area of low pressure will affect parts of the UK on Saturday with some very strong gusts of wind likely to its south,” the Met Office said.

“A blustery and showery day (with some thunder) will see winds gust widely to 40mph, and locally up to 50 to 55mph during the daytime.

“The strongest gusts are likely to occur mainly, but by no means exclusively, over hills and along the south coast.

“Some minor damage and travel disruption is likely.

“Winds will moderate later in the evening and overnight.”

The Met Office forecasts winds of 51mph in Sevenoaks, 49mph in Dartford, and 48mph in Canterbury, Gillingham and Gravesend.

The Met Office says some delays to road, rail, air and ferry transport is likely, and short-term loss of power and other services is possible.

It is also likely some coastal routes, seafronts and coastal communities will be affected by spray and large waves.

Some damage to trees or temporary structures, such as marquees, tents and inflatables, could also occur.
