Whitstable Town manager Justin Luchford hopes his defence plug the holes ahead of Bognor Regis Town visit

Whitstable manager Justin Luchford has warned his players to curb their generosity for the visit of the leaders this weekend.

A home game against Bognor Regis Town will severely test the Oystermen’s leaky defence, which has already conceded 48 goals – more than any other club in Ryman League, Division 1 South.

The Rocks boast the division’s best attack and Luchford (pictured), who saw his side beaten 3-2 at basement club Burgess Hill on Saturday, knows Town can’t afford a repeat performance.

He said: "Collectively, we’ve got to be better at defending because all three goals were errors. We’ve got the worst goals-against record in the league and we can’t move forward unless we start putting clean sheets together.

"Managers and coaches are there to provide guidance. Unfortunately, once they cross the white line, it’s up to the players to put that into action.

With Steven Lloyd and Gary Sayer both struggling to shake off injuries, Luchford is hopeful of including a new signing in his squad for the Bognor clash.

He will speak to a second player at the start of next week after lodging a seven-day approach.
