THE inquest into the death of former Kent cricketer Bob Woolmer has heard there was no evidence linking his death to match-fixing.

The statement came from Jamaica Deputy Police Commissioner Mark Shields, the lead investigator in the case, giving evidence at the hearing in Kingston.

Mr Woolmer, 58, was found unconscious in his Kingston hotel room on March 18, a day after the Pakistan team which he coached was beaten by unfancied Ireland in the cricket World Cup.

The police had initially backed the government pathologist Ere Sheshiah’s finding that he was murdered.

However, a review by three other pathologists concluded Mr Woolmer died of natural causes, possibly due to a heart attack.

The inquest was due to finish last week, but is still hearing evidence.
