Work starts on £4m sports centre

Work has started on a £4million university sports and recreation centre in Canterbury.

It is being built for Christ Church University in Pilgrims Lane but the facilites will be shared with Barton Court Grammar School.

It will feature two full-sized netball/basketball courts and provision for other sports, including volleyball, badminton and cricket.

There will also be a fitness suite and an aerobics room for dance and exercise classes.

The main sports hall will be able to be partitioned so that it can be used simultaneously by Barton Court and university students as well as having separate sets of changing rooms.

It is being built by Pellikaan Construction, which has developed more than 900 sports centres across Europe, and is due to be completed next April.
