A suspected would-be thief has been arrested after shining a torch into a police car in the early hours - while on-duty officers sat inside.

Patrols were sitting in an unmarked police car in Bawden Close, Canterbury, on Saturday when they saw a man on a bicycle holding a torch and acting suspiciously around other vehicles.

When the officers tried to approach the suspect, he is said to have cycled away - but crashed into a nearby wheelie bin.

He then reportedly ran away, but was found and stopped by police.

He was found with items including a hammer, a small folding knife and two bags of a white powder, suspected to be amphetamine.

A 28-year-old man, of no fixed address, was arrested on suspicion of going equipped to steal, and possession of Class B drugs.

He has now been released, pending further investigation.
