Daredevil youngsters have this week been warned against jumping off the pier after the Coastguard was called into action.

Crews raced to the scene on Monday after children were seen throwing themselves off the iconic landmark and into the sea, a stunt known as tombstoning.

Six people have died and 22 seriously injured in similar incidents in the last two years, but the police and council are powerless to stop it.

The Coastguard and police were only able to offer safety advice as they watched the youngsters risk life and limb.

The council’s public safety boss Doug Rattray said: “Unfortunately every year in the UK young people are killed and seriously injured as a result of tombstoning.

“Our coastline is particularly unsuitable. There are submerged objects which are not visible, like rocks, and the strong tidal currents can sweep people away.

“Common injuries are to the legs and back and permanent paralysis is often caused.

“We work as a partnership to make young people aware of the dangers and try to get the message over of the tragic consequences of this practice.”
