AMHERST Primary School from Sevenoaks are the Primary Schools Kwik Cricket Champions of Kent.
They overcame 23 other schools, all district champions, in the county final in Canterbury as 250 children played in 108 matches on 12 pitches spread around the St Lawrence Ground.
Kent’s fast bowling star Martin Saggers presented Amherst with the BBC Sport Kwik Cricket Cup, and medals to all the other teams.
Amherst’s win was their third county title, the only school to achieve this feat, having previously won in 1999 and 2000. West Hill (Dartford) were the losing finalists.
David Sear, Kent Cricket Development Officer said the final was the best supported in the 10 years it has been held at Canterbury, with 500 parents, grandparents, teachers and friends attending.
A record entry of more than 400 teams had taken part, with 4,000 boys and girls playing cricket in 32 district festivals.
The teachers and umpires nominated 50 children displaying feats of brilliance or ‘champagne moments’, and among the six winners drawn out of the hat was Josh Harrison-Dring, of Nonington, who had achieved two run outs from his excellent throws
Newlands, the Thanet champions, came away with a Kwik Cricket set by winning the competition for the best banner.
The final was sponsored by Tunbridge Wells based Pritchard Stockbrokers and Kent County Council.
David Sear, Kent Cricket Development Officer, said: “Their sponsorship meant we were able to produce different coloured baseball hats for the teams, medals for all 240 players, trophies for the two plate competitions, polo shirts for all members of staff in charge of teams.”
