UGLY scenes marred the end of an amateur football match in Kent on Saturday.

Allegations have flown back and forth since the final whistle brought a tense clash between Canterbury City and APM Mears - the top two teams in British Energy Kent County League Division 2 East - to an end with the score at 1-1.

APM ended the game the happier side after grabbing a 92nd minute equaliser to end City's 100 per cent start to the season.

However, the leveller sparked a chain of unsavoury events including a 20-man melee on the pitch.

Both teams have pledged to investigate and both chairmen have been quick to criticise the scenes.

City chairman Phil Knight said: "The club regret the unfortunate scenes that followed the game as players from both sides confronted each other while leaving the pitch.

"Fortunately, Dave Fairclough and his backroom staff managed to calm the situation down."

He added: "The club await the referee's report and will investigate the matter fully as soon as the report is received."

APM chairman Murray Hodgson, who ran the line during the game, admitted the actions of one of his players had been "out of order" but claimed he had been provoked.

He said: "There were a lot of supporters at the game. It was a very tense atmosphere and some of them are not used to playing in that sort of atmosphere.

"The game had been played in a good spirit."

City manager Dave Fairclough condemned the scenes as "disgraceful" and "disturbing."
