Daniel Bell-Drummond has dismissed any talk of international honours and says he just hopes his purple patch can continue in Kent’s forthcoming championship games.
The 21-year-old hit 123 in Kent’s clash with Glamorgan on Sunday – his third century in five First Class matches this season – to follow the 103 he made in the second innings of the draw at home to Leicestershire four days before.
The opener tops the club’s scoring charts with 321 at an average of 40 in the four games so far in LV= County Championship Division 2 and admitted: “I am pretty impressed with how I’ve been feeling and glad with the form I’ve been in.
“Hopefully, I can try and continue in our next few championship games. I am just glad to cash in, make it count and go big. I always try and hit hundreds and as many runs as I can. Hopefully, I can keep my form going.”
He added: “It’s always something the batsmen want to do, especially if you get off to a good start with the new ball – you want to kick on and get to the hundreds and not get out for 30s or 50s.
“Some of the guys are a bit disappointed to have got out but at the same time, they are happy that they got those starts and were able to help the team out.”
Bell-Drummond’s form has led to predictions of a future in an England shirt, although the youngster played down the expectations, saying: “I have just got to do my job. It’s always nice when people speak about you and sing your praises but I have to keep trying to do the same things, go out and bat and try to get as much out of my purple patch at the moment.”
Bell-Drummond also paid tribute to opening partner Joe Denly, who has replaced Rob Key at the top of the order this season.
He said: “It’s good opening with Joe, I played with him in my first year on the staff before he left for Middlesex and he’s a good player.
“It’s good to open with him. Hopefully, we can get a few more partnerships moving forward.
“They (Denly and Key) are both similar players, they both like to go after their shots, both international players. Either one to open with is a bonus for the team.”
