A GOAL 30 seconds from time by Canterbury’s Anna Bennett has given England hope of finishing fifth in the women’s Hockey World Cup.

The dramatic goal from Bennett, who had won her 150th England cap in the previous match against the USA, gave England a 3-0 win over Spain today (Wednesday), and thus allowed them to overtake their opponents in their qualifying pool on goal difference.

England finished third in the group, and next face a play-off match, against Germany, on Friday.

England, whose squad includes Canterbury’s Mel Clewlow and Frances Houslop, had dominated the match against Spain, scoring earlier through Helen Grant and Jane Smith.

It was one of their best performances in an inconsistent tournament, which had started with victory over Ireland, a draw with South Africa and defeat by the Netherlands.

They gave an improved display against Australia, with Leisa King scoring, but lost 3-1 after missing a penalty as Katrina Powell scored twice in her 200th appearance.

The 1-1 draw against Japan, however, was described by coach Tricia Heberle as one of their worst under her command, and only a penalty corner by Kate Walsh saved them from defeat.

Another disjointed display at least brought a 1-0 win over the USA as Bennett celebrated her milestone, Lucilla Wright finding the net after 53 minutes.
