Mel Clewlow equalised for Britain

Canterbury's Mel Clewlow marked her 250th international appearance with the goal which helped Great Britain to the first point of their Olympic women's hockey qualifying campaign in Beijing.

Britain trailed 2-0 at half-time to world number two seeds Argentina but, after Sarah Thomas had halved the deficit on 49 minutes Clewlow drilled home another corner just two minutes later.

Defender Clewlow, 32, made her international debut in 1996 and has collected 179 England caps plus another 71 for GB.

Head coach Danny Kerry - who was also her coach at Canterbury - hailed her achievement in reaching 250 caps. He said: “I’m delighted for Mel. We have a love-hate relationship,” he joked.

“She retired back in 2005 along with a number of other players who I thought had a lot left in them playing for GB and she was one of those, so I’m glad she came back. Her father died 18 months ago and I know he encouraged her to return, and I’m delighted for her that she scored on her 250th international appearance.”

GB have one point from their opening two games, having lost 5-1 to Germany on Sunday, They face Nez Zealand on Thursday (start 2pm BST)
