Zak Crawley has been ruled out of the first two Tests against India with a wrist injury.

The Kent batsman, who turned 23 on Wednesday, had a birthday to remember for all the wrong reasons as he waited on news of a scan.

Crawley slipped as he left the England dressing room on Tuesday and it was confirmed on Thursday that he had jarred his right wrist and "sprained" the joint.

An England statement said: "Following the results of last night’s scan, England top-order batsman Zak Crawley has been ruled out of the first two Tests of the India versus England series.

"Scan results have confirmed that Crawley has jarred his right wrist, which has sprained the joint and led to local inflammation.

"The Kent player sustained the injury during England’s practice in Chennai on Tuesday when he slipped on the marble floor leaving the dressing rooms onto the field of play.

"The England medical team will continue to assess his progress over the next few weeks."

Crawley, who made just 35 runs in two Tests against Sri Lanka last month, has an average of 38.50 from his first 10 Tests for England.

The series against India is being televised live by Channel 4, the first time an England Test series has been shown live on terrestrial television since the 2005 Ashes.

The first Test starts on Friday morning in Chennai.
