Calum Haggett always felt Kent had a chance of winning their game against Middlesex in the Royal London One-Day Cup.

Haggett took 3-59 with the ball and hit 31 with the bat in their 70 run defeat on Sunday.

The 27-year-old was instrumental in restricting the hosts to 313 when at one stage they looked set for a far larger total.

Haggett said: “They got off to a very good start with Stirling going great guns up front and they batted quite nicely.

“As a bowling group I thought we brought it back quite well. I think we were very happy to restrict them to 313 off the 50 overs and we were quite positive.

“It was nice to come back strongly after the initial first few over, which weren’t great. I ended up happy and had been working on some skills at the death and it came off today. There’s other days where it quite doesn’t happen but that is the nature of the game.

“The bowling performance from everyone in the end was a decent one.”

Kent’s batters could not back up the bowling performance and fell 70 runs short of their target.

Haggett himself made 31 before he was run out.

He said: “It was quite a small boundary one side and straight and the wicket was fairly flat so as a team we were quite happy.

“When we were batting it was a bit up and down really. Heino batted superbly for his 90 and a couple of lads chipped in. It would have been nice if a few more of us could have gone on a bit more.

“Being in the position we were in when I was out there with Heino, I thought we were in with a chance as the track was a fairly decent one. It was a shame really as if I hadn’t got run out, because I’m so slow, we might have had a chance.

“With Heino out there we were always in the game.”
