Sam Denly has challenged Herne Bay to build on their storming comeback at Chipstead.

Injury-hit Bay trailed 3-1 midway through the second half last weekend but recovered to win 4-3.

Bay host Ryman League, Division 1 South strugglers Horsham on Saturday and boss Denly said: “We have a young side and a few of them came of age in that last 20 minutes.

“It was a great comeback and the changing room was a good place to be after the game.

“The reaction was just what we were looking for and we might even have won by more.

“We’re building a side and we will be a little naive at times with so many young players but we showed what we are made of.

“To turn it around like we did says a lot about the boys’ character and now we need to build on it on against Horsham.”

Former Notts County and Gillingham striker Jamie O’Connell scored twice in Bay’s victory and looks set for a run in the side if he steers clear of injury.

Denly added: “He’d been on the bench for four or five weeks but got his chance and he took it.

“Goals were all that was missing from his game but he got two on Saturday. You don’t spend two years at Notts County for no reason. He’s just been unlucky with injuries.

“Obviously he had a bad knee injury, then he snapped his hamstring while he was recovering.

“He’s made of glass but we’ll look after him and hopefully he can stay injury-free.”

Defender Steven Lloyd and striker Stuart King are the main injury doubts for the Horsham game.

Lloyd dislocated his shoulder and broke his nose against Chipstead, while King has a hamstring problem.
