Sean Dickson backed the Kent team to beat any side in the Royal London One-Day Cup.

The Spitfires will travel to Trent Bridge to face Nottinghamshire on Thursday in the quarter-final of the competition.

If they win that game they will then have a semi-final away match against Worcestershire on the following Sunday (June 17).

Dickson said: “I’m not phased at all by who we play. It’s got nothing to do with who you play at this stage.

“You look at the Surrey game and them on paper should have beaten us by miles. We turned the table and beat them by miles.

“It’s a case of doing it on the day and doing the basics better. I back us against any team.”

Dickson top-scored with 51 in Kent’s unsuccessful run chase in the last group match last Wednesday.

Ravi Bopara (125) and Dan Lawrence (115) fired Essex to victory as the Eagles posted 337-8.

The 153-run defeat ended a run of five straight victories in the competition with the Spitfires missing the opportunity of going straight through to a home semi-final.

Dickson said: “It’s a bit of a hard pill to swallow as we’ve been on such a good run lately winning five on the trot. We wanted to come here and keep the momentum going but we’d rather have that hiccup now than next Thursday.

“It was a must win game for them and you could tell it. It was a very slow and low wicket so it was always going to be tough to get 330 on it.”

The Spitfires lost early wickets in their run-chase and slumped to 53-4 before Dickson and Alex Blake (41) built a partnership.

Dickson added: “I gave myself the best chance and try and get us as close as we could for the last 10 overs. We just kept losing wickets, which will always put you under pressure. All credit to Essex as they bowled exceptionally well.

“It was just an off day. Our top three have flourished in these last five games so it’s a shame they couldn’t get going as they’ve put us in such great positions. The guys are all human and we are due a bad game here and there.

“It’s a case of trying our best come Thursday.”
