Matt Walker has confirmed that Allan Donald remains on course to take up his post as Kent assistant coach in the new year.

The former South Africa pace man was appointed in January but was prevented from taking up the role because he needed to obtain a Level 3 coaching qualification before his work permit was granted.

Ex Australian fast bowler Jason Gillespie was brought in on a short-term contract but it was always the county’s intention to stick by Donald.

The 50-year-old subsequently spent part of the summer working with Sri Lanka’s Champions Trophy squad - a role he was able to fulfil because visa requirements only apply to employers in the UK.

Kent head coach coach Walker revealed that he and Donald, who took 330 wickets in 72 Tests and 272 scalps in 164 one-day internationals, have been in regular contact and that the one-time Warwickshire bowler is looking forward to having more significant role with the club in 2018.

He said: “Allan’s hoping to become available in the new year, certainly that’s the understanding. Hopefully it all goes smoothly, I’m sure it will and Allan will be with us next year.

“I know he’s looking forward to it. I’ve spoken to him quite a bit over the last few months, well since he hasn’t been here. We’ve kept in contact and he’s been incredibly supportive from overseas.

“He is very much looking forward to coming and actually getting here and working with the group.

“He’s stayed in touch and hopefully we’ll see him nice and soon in the new year.”

Donald has previously worked at Warwickshire and also enjoyed spells with the Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and England national teams as well as coaching Indian Premier League franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore.
