A former Kent coach helped guide Afghanistan to a major group-stage Cricket World Cup shock win over England on Sunday.
England suffered a 69-run loss to Afghanistan - led by Jonathan Trott - in Delhi. It was England’s first defeat to them in any format.
Trott, 42, is an ex-England international and worked with Kent in the 2019 season.
Speaking after the win, he said: “This is significant - certainly in the manner and by the margin as well.
“There’s a lot of confidence that will, hopefully, come from this when competing against the bigger nations and it’ll have a knock-on effect for all the other games, not only in this World Cup, but for the future as well.
“It’s not just cricket that the guys are playing for.
“The guys are very aware of the hardships that some people are enduring due to natural disasters and various other reasons.
“If this can bring a smile to people’s faces anywhere in the world, and also encourage boys and girls in Afghanistan to pick up a cricket bat or a cricket ball and play wherever they are, then that’s the goal.”
South African-born Trott played 52 Test matches for England and made more than 3,000 runs at that level ahead of his retirement as a player in 2018.
Afghanistan totalled 284 all out. All-rounder Mohammad Nabi, also at Kent in 2019, made only nine.
But the vastly experienced 38-year-old claimed 2-16 from six overs with the ball as England slumped to 215 all out, despite Harry Brook’s 61-ball 66.
Defending champions England, with just one win from three matches so far in the tournament, will play South Africa in Mumbai this Saturday.
Afghanistan take on New Zealand in Chennai on Wednesday before Monday’s match with Pakistan.
