Canterbury City joint manager Ada Gower is waiting on teams in the Ryman League to release players before looking to strengthen his own squad.

The City boss has yet to make any new signings for the forthcoming Southern Counties East season but has managed to keep his squad from the last term intact.

He said: “We’ve had 25 or 30 players in training but we won’t be able to hold on to that many so we’ll have to whittle them down to about 18.

“I’m hoping to get in a few extras. I know clubs in the Ryman League are still looking at their players and I’m sure some of those will come our way.

“I know the managers Sam Denly at Herne Bay, Will Graham at Whitstable and Ray Turner at Faversham well, so there could be some business there, particularly with regard to loan signings.”

Gower doesn’t envisage any more than two or three new signings around the place but he does acknowledge the need for a forward.

He said: “That was our downfall last season. If we’d had a striker getting 20-25 goals, we would have finished in the top five or six. In fairness, our man holds the ball up well but we haven’t got a finisher.”
