Host gymnasts star in Canterbury Cup

MORE than 200 gymnasts from clubs across the UK converged on the city to take part in the 2008 Canterbury Cup.The first day of competition saw novice and intermediate competitors in action while leading national stars took to the floor the following day.St Anselm’s School played host to the event - which was organised by the City of Canterbury Rhythmic Gymnastics Club, who enjoyed a successful weekend with a large medal haul.Victoria Allen won a silver in the under-10 novice rope while her Canterbury teammate Sophie Hart took bronze in the same competition.In the under-10 novice ball, Anouska Webb took silver while Millie Jerram won gold in the under-9 intermediate free routine.The following day, Abbie Wyver took a gold with her free routine and a silver in the hoop discipline to be crowned the overall winner in the under-9s competition.Lottie Wittica took a bronze in the free routine in the same age group.In the under-10s competition Poppy Collins took gold in the rope while Emma Griffin won the bronze medal in the hoop.Jael Gore was runner-up in the ball competition for under-11s.Catherine Holness took silver in the rope, ball and clubs disciplines in the under-12 competition while Jordan Croucher took bronze in the same events.Kezi Gore, 13, was the overall winner of the juniors competition after taking gold in the ball, rope and hoop competitions while 14-year-old teammate Jo Matcham took silver in the rope and ribbon events.The two belong to the Great Britain Junior team, which used the competition as a warm-up event for the forthcoming European Championships.In the senior competition Hulda Svavarsdottir took bronze in the clubs event and silvers in the rope, ribbon and hoop.
