Kent lost by 90 runs against Hampshire as they started their Royal London One-Day Cup campaign with a repeat of last year's final at Lord's.

Sam Northeast scored a century against his former side to lead the visitors towards a score of 310-9 following a five-wicket haul from Matt Milnes.

Zak Crawley top-scored for Kent with 49 as Matt Walker's men stumbled to 220 all out after 40 overs.

Milnes marked his white-ball debut with a wicket on his first ball of the game when opener Tom Alsop (27) clipped his delivery to wicketkeeper Adam Rouse, who returned to the side in place of Ollie Robinson.

He then bowled Aiden Markram for 24 to reduce Hampshire to 62-2 after 13.1 overs before skipper James Vince fired 56 from 53 balls to frustrate the hosts.

His innings eventually came to an end when his top edge nestled into the hands of Fred Klaassen off Imran Qayyum's bowling.

Northeast extended Hampshire's tally on his way towards an unbeaten 105, while Rilee Rossouw offered support with his 55 from 43 balls.

Milnes struck again to send the latter back to the pavilion, with Matt Renshaw making the catch to leave last year's winners on 213-4.

The former Nottinghamshire seamer later claimed the wickets of Liam Dawson (7) and Aneurin Donald (0) to complete his five-fer.

There was also a first white-ball wicket for Klaassen (2-62), who caught off his own bowling from James Fuller as well as seeing Kyle Abbott sky his delivery to Milnes.

Chris Wood was brilliantly run out by Heino Kuhn as Hampshire finished 310-9 off their 50 overs.

Kent's reply endured a disappointing start as Daniel Bell-Drummond went for 11, after being caught by Fuller off the bowling of Abbott, before Renshaw was caught for five.

Kuhn, who top scored in last season's competition with 696 runs, was then unfortunate to be run out for a duck when Crawley's shot scraped the fingers of bowler Abbott on route to hitting the stumps at the non-striker's end.

Alex Blake was on his way for 20 seven overs later having been trapped lbw by Dawson with Kent on 79-4.

Crawley (49)had been Kent's best hope of gaining some control until he was run out by Markram, again at the non-striker's end, after a misunderstanding with Rouse (22).

Darren Stevens supplied a tidy 30 from 29 balls at No.7 but left the field visibly disappointed with himself after finding Fuller in the deep off the bowling of Mason Crane.

Harry Podmore hit a career-best score of 40 as he and Milnes (26) forged a 50 partnership to fuel late hope, only for the former to watch Dawson dismiss him with a fine catch from Wood's ball.

Milnes was run out by Wood before Dawson bowled Qayyum (7) to wrap up the victory.
