Kent Spitfires v Surrey Brown Caps

THE re-named Surrey Brown Caps under the leadership of new skipper Mark Butcher will provide Kent's bank holiday Monday opposition in Canterbury.

Spitfires will be hoping for a big crowd and a much improved performance in this their second of seven C&G Trophy qualifiers after their dismal 112-run defeat to Somerset in last weekend's rain-ruined opening tie at St Lawrence.

Captain Rob Key, still looking for his first win since taking over the helm from David Fulton, may look to alter his batting order after seeing his side slump to 51 for five in that defeat.

All-rounder Justin Kemp will bolster the middle order following his arrival from South Africa, but that might make it difficult for Joe Denly to find a place.

Surrey have rung the changes since suffering championship relegation last summer and have appointed Butcher to succeed Mark Ramprakash as skipper while his father, Alan, is now first team coach.

Mohammad Akram is retained as their first overseas bowler but, in the spin department, Indian leg-spinner Anil Kumble has replaced his countryman Harbhajan Singh.

Kent will go into the tie relatively fresh having enjoyed a rare Sunday off.

As for Surrey, the match will represent their sixth successive day of cricket following on from a four-day clash in Leicester and their opening Trophy qualifier against Sussex 24 hours earlier.
