Kent are looking to appoint a new director of cricket responsible for the long term vision of the club’s fortunes on the field.
The job was posted on the club’s website last week advertising the role with the key responsibility of running the professional cricket operation of the club.
Outgoing chief executive, Jamie Clifford, has explained why the club is seeking to employ a new director of cricket to oversee things for Kent.
He said: “If you look at some of the counties who have been successful in recent years there is a theme there and they seem to have a very decent role in success.
“There is an evolution of our structure and as we want to achieve more we need more fire power leading and managing the activities of the club.
“The job will be to look at all aspect of cricket operations from age group programmes, to academy, to first team but also looking outward to recruitment and identifying best practice.
“The game is developing with strength and conditioning to analytics and nutrition. We want someone who is alive to the big wide world of cricket and taking those ideas and working them for Kent.”
The director of cricket will not be responsible for the day-to-day coaching of the first team, this responsibility will still lie with Matt Walker.
Both Walker and captain, Sam Northeast, are looking forward to the prospect of having another person on the team to look at the longer term strategy.
“They (Walker and Northeast) want to be focused on what happens game-to-game and through the course of the season. There’s a lot work that goes on around the club to get the players on the field so things like player acquisition and renegotiation of contracts and recruitment of assistant coaches at various times of the year.
“This stuff is really important but the coach and captain can be uncluttered with that stuff and it can go on away from the dressing room.
“They pushed hard for this role and believe it will be a really strong addition to the cricketing staff.”
Directors of cricket have been employed successfully at other county sides like Sussex, Middlesex and Nottinghamshire and the club are open to the ideas the right person for the job brings.
Clifford added: “We don’t have any preconceived ideas that it has to be a director of cricket with a coaching leaning or a more administration leaning. We want to find the best fit and the person to take on the role.”
Applications for the job close on Wednesday (December 20) with first interviews likely to take place on January 11 and 12, 2018, and second interviews likely on the week commencing on January 22, 2018.
