Harry Podmore is ready to lead the Kent attack next season and hopes to be considered as an all-rounder in the future.

The 24-year-old signed a contract extension with the club on Monday that will see him stay until the end of the 2021 season.

He was instrumental in Kent’s promotion winning campaign to Division 1 of the Specsavers County Championship taking 43 wickets.

Podmore said: “As a county cricketer you want to play Division 1 cricket and push for higher honours. For me it is about trying to build on my success this year and help add to the history of the club.

“It is always good to have Matt Henry in your attack but if he’s not available next year then I would love to be called upon to lead the attack with Darren Stevens.

“Everyone needs to be able to do more than one discipline these days. You cannot get away with being just a specialist bowler or batsman.

“I’m working hard on my batting and I want to be an all-rounder.

“There will be a fast bowling camp that we are going on in February but until then I will be in Canterbury and working hard preparing for next season.”

Podmore joined Kent at the start of the 2018 season from Middlesex after finding first team opportunities limited.

He took that chance and was rewarded with a new contract.

Podmore said: “I hope it is just the start of a long successful relationship between myself and the club. It is nice they have put faith in me and shown that intention.

“The fact that they are putting faith in me makes you feel more valued as a cricketer.

“It is tough when you are at a club for so long and you are known as young Harry Podmore but here I’m known as Harry Podmore the cricketer. It was good to get a fresh chance at Kent.

“I want to give back to the club as they took a chance on me.

“The season definitely could not have gone much better for me.

“I have been a professional for seven years and I have backed my ability all that time. Having that game time this season has really given me that confidence.”
