Nicky Southall has released striker Mo Takaloo as he bids to free up wage space to make a splash in the transfer market.

Southall is hunting a top striker to lead the line at the goal-shy Oystermen, who have scored four goals in their last seven games – three of those in one match against Chipstead.

Southall said: “Along with the chairman and Jason (Lillis, assistant manager), I’ve met with three forwards from clubs in higher divisions this week and talked to them about coming here.

“We are trying to address the problems. We need someone who’s going to stick the ball in the net.”

He added: “I am thankful to the chairman who has put together a great package to try and get someone on board. If we could get one of them, in particular, it would be a real coup for us.

“Things are progressing and we will hear on Thursday or Friday. Hopefully, if he chooses to come to us, the club will release his signature in time for him to play in Guernsey this weekend.”

One of those making way for the planned new arrival is former Maidstone and Ashford forward Takaloo, who has scored just twice in Town’s eight games this season.

Southall said: “We need a shake up and I’m looking to release one or two to free up some money in the budget.

“It’s just not worked out with Mo, not for a lack of effort on his part but we wish him the best.”

He added: “I have spoken to the players and told them you win games in the two boxes. At the minute, we are on edge a bit, we look a bit nervous, snatching at chances.

“When you’re in a situation like this, it can play on people’s minds. When you’re confident, the chances become simpler, you tend not to think about them.” Town make their longest journey of the season on Saturday with the subsidised trip to the Channel Islands looking for their second win of the season and then host Ramsgate on Tuesday (7.45pm).

Southall said: “We have two tough games in quick succession but if we could get two quick wins, then it can change the whole outlook.

“I am disappointed to be out of the cup and that we will miss out on the revenue it brings but my main focus has always been the league.”

The trip to Guernsey will be beamed back to the Belmont clubhouse and screened live (1pm).
