Spires Academy’s first equestrian competition post-pandemic proved a memorable one after a draw with King’s School.

Despite King’s greater experience - they had several older riders - Spires’ Year 7s held their own.

Aimee Thompson gave an outstanding performance in her very first equestrian competition and, after a gruelling first round, won with an exceptional ride with Maise Holmes a close second after one of the best turns seen at school level.

Not to be outdone, the remaining members of the squad demonstrated their character and determination.

After a mixed round two and three, with King’s coming out the winners, Orlaith Dyball - like Thompson riding in her first Spires competition - thrived under pressure on her way to a brilliant first place.

Teacher Nicky Lewis said: “It was an incredible achievement, especially as all of the girls haven’t jumped in a Spires competition before.

“It reflects the hard work and dedication of the girls, as well as the high quality of the elite provision at Spires Equestrian.”
