Jarryd Taig is urging Canterbury Cricket Club 1sts’ batsmen to take lessons from their six-wicket Kent League Premier Division defeat at Bexley 1sts on Saturday.

Canterbury were 82-5 before Italian international overseas all-rounder Anthony Mosca (64) helped them recover to total 178 all out.

But the damage had already been done and, despite Mosca (2-31) also doing well with the ball, Bexley got home with 15 balls to spare.

Club captain Taig reflected: “It sort of breaks down to two things.

“Obviously, one wasn’t [getting] enough runs and, from what I saw, there were a lot of people not really putting enough value on their wicket.

“There were a lot of stupid shots and I think there’s a lot of learning there for some of the young guys.

“But also what I saw was a little bit of a gap in our bowling. We probably needed another seamer.

“We dried it up really well but we were just lacking that one extra bowler.”

One player Canterbury couldn’t ask for any more from was 32-year-old Mosca.

“For him to have a day out like he did, but to not help him out enough to get the result, I’d say that was the most disappointing thing,” Taig said.

Taig himself missed the journey up to Bexley due to work commitments, Isaac Dilkes standing in as skipper for the day.

“I probably wasn’t going to play anyway because my back has been playing up a little bit,” said Taig, who expects to return this weekend.

“I’ve been a little bit worried about that, so I thought I’d take the chance to work while I could.”

Canterbury - with one league victory from three since promotion - welcome Blackheath to Polo Farm this Saturday.

Taig said: “It’s got that feeling already this season that teams are going to win against teams they almost shouldn’t win against. Then, they’ll lose to teams they maybe should beat.

“It does feel like it’s going to be a mixed-results season for a lot of teams.

“We’re going to make a couple of little changes to the squad.

“Hopefully, that will balance out our batting order and help with our bowling, as well.”

St Lawrence & Highland Court 1sts were edged out at home to defending champions Lordswood, who made it three league wins from three this summer.

Oliver Curtiss claimed 2-46 for the hosts from 10 overs in Lordswood’s 252-4.

In reply, St Lawrence & Highland Court then found themselves 110-5 and, although Curtiss (69 not out) also did superbly with the bat, they could only reach 248-9.

They make the short trip to Sandwich Town this Saturday.
