Triumph for Kerly and Co

FORMER internationals Sean Kerly and Roly Brookeman scored twice each as Canterbury Hockey Club’s veteran side won 5-3 away to holders East Grinstead in the National Veterans’ Cup at the weekend.
It was sweet revenge for Canterbury, who played with considerable courage and determination to win the second round tie against the team who had beaten them in last year’s final.
The home side started strongly and took the lead from a Richard Organ strike. Kerly replied quickly with a turn and crisp shot over the keeper, but Canterbury again went behind before the interval to a penalty flick.
After the break Canterbury seized control, with Kerly poaching a goal, and Brookeman first finishing a marvellous passing move with Jim Laslett and then cleverly looping a shot over the keeper, before a deflected shot from Peter Sumpter made it 5-2.
With time running out East Grinstead did manage to convert another penalty flick but were otherwise kept out by some solid defending, particularly from DaveTingey at sweeper.
