Assistant coach Matt Walker says Kent need to start winning soon if they are to achieve their goals in LV= County Championship Division 2 this season.

Kent are seeking to end eight years of hurt when they take to the field for their first championship home game of the season on Sunday.

They have not won their opening home game since they overcame Sussex in Division 1 in 2007 but will try to end that run when they entertain Leicestershire at the Spitfire Ground, St Lawrence (11am).

After defeat inside three days at Essex and toiling against Lancashire at Old Trafford this week, Kent are on a seven-game winless streak stretching back to last July.

They drew their opening home game of 2014 – also against Leicestershire – and have won just five home games from 24 played in the championship in the past three seasons.

Walker said: “You always want to make a good start and put points on the board and get confidence in place.

“We were disappointed not to get something more from the game at Essex – it could have gone either way – and we didn’t quite do enough this week either.

“We’ve been OK but not quite as good as we know we can be, which is the most disappointing thing.”

He added: “We have good players and they have been excellent in places but they have got to deliver consistently – it’s the same story as last year.

“We back our squad. We have good players but if we want to do anything this season, then it is up to them to start putting in consistent performances.”
