A disappointed Daniel Bell-Drummond admitted responsibility for his part in Kent’s demise on the second day of their eight-wicket humbling at home to Derbyshire this week.

The hosts somehow allowed a commanding position to slip to a defeat at the Spitfire Ground, St Lawrence – their fourth loss in seven LV= County Championship, Division 2 games – despite skittling the visitors for just 86 on the second morning to seal a first innings advantage of 119.

A monumental second innings collapse, sparked by Bell-Drummond being run out when well set on 45, two balls before lunch, saw the hosts slip from 73-2 to 112 all out. This left Derbyshire a target of 232 for victory, a score which they rattled off without any drama, securing victory with more than five sessions to spare.

Bell-Drummond, who had made just two in Kent's first innings, admitted: “I was a bit annoyed I got out how I did, just before lunch. I take full responsibility for that because we were in a great position and we’d just seen off the most important part which was the new ball part.

“I think the game had showed the new ball was very critical and for me to see that bit off and then to get out, especially in the fashion I did, was very disappointing. I think it gave Derbyshire quite a bit of momentum after the break and they really pushed on and bowled well.

“Everyone has bad days, and good days, but unfortunately I felt that was my good day and I should have taken advantage of that. It was a shame.”

The 21-year-old added: “We really didn’t turn up with the bat. The bowlers put in a brilliant performance, in the first innings especially, but we can’t really bowl teams out twice on a decent wicket for 80.

“We’re not happy, especially with the batting, it was a disappointing performance but you can’t really dwell on it – we need to move on.”
