Canterbury survived a last-minute scare to pip Lydney and record a second successive win in National League 3 South.

The home side outscored their West Country rivals by three tries to one but the result remained in the balance until the last kick of the contest when visiting fly-half Mark Davies missed his first penalty of the afternoon.

Lydney raced into a 10-0 lead with Davies kicking an early penalty and then adding the extra points to a try he also created for Charlie Vine.

Mike Melford began the Canterbury comeback with a try converted by Gert de Kock, who was also on hand with the conversion after Pat Sykes had gone over for their second score.

A second Davies penalty cut the deficit to a point at the break, but the second period was disappointing in comparison with the first.

A fine try by Canterbury scrum-half Reza Amiri-Garroussi provided the one highlight, but Davies kept his side in touch with another penalty and had the chance to level the scores at the death only for his last-gasp kick to drop just short.

Canterbury are away to Rugby Lions on Saturday.

In National League 2, Westcombe Park lost 21-18 at home to Cinderford. Tyron Child and Lee Campion scored Combe's tries.
