Kwan Browne had mixed emotions despite Canterbury taking a great stride towards a place in the Wembley finals of the Hockey 5s Indoor Championships.
The city club’s men look well set to qualify for finals day on January 25, after claiming nine points from a possible 12 in the opening weekend of National Premier Division action at St George’s Park, Burton.
Player-coach Browne’s side began with a 12-2 win against local rivals Holcombe on Saturday and followed it up with a 10-8 success against Reading the same day.
Ben Allberry led the way with seven goals spread over the two games while Liam Foster bagged four against Reading.
The following day Canterbury made it three wins from three courtesy of a 5-1 success against Surbiton with Wei Adams scoring twice and others coming from Foster, Allberry and Harry Jawanda.
But they reached the half-way stage with a 6-4 defeat against Sevenoaks, leaving them second, three points behind defending champions East Grinstead.
Canterbury have a five-point gap in the race for the semi-finals, with fifth-placed Bath Buccaneers also having a goal difference which is 17 worse than the city club.
Trinidadian ace Browne (pictured) admitted: “We’d have taken three wins before the weekend.
“However when it comes to it we were a bit disappointed not to have made it four wins, with the defeat in the last game.
“You never know quite what’s going to happen in indoor hockey, but we’d have taken this position before the weekend.”
