CANTERBURY Rugby Club are enjoying their highest position in their debut season in National 3 South after Saturday's 39-19 win over Bridgwater and Albion at Merton Lane.

They now stand sixth, with a trip to bottom club Clifton to come next Saturday.

A confident all-round display yielded six tries, although Bridgwater made a praiseworthy contribution.

Canterbury fly half Wessel Wolmarans scored from his own chip forward after three minutes and although B & A nullified it with one from wing Jon Edwards a long spell of Canterbury pressure produced a score behind the posts for Gert De Kock.

On 29 minutes Wolmarans added a penalty goal to his two conversions but Bridgwater fly half Christian Wullf claimed a try and conversion.

However, when Bridgwater lock Danny Hodge was yellow carded, Canterbury's Pat Sykes scored and skipper Chris Hinkins added touchdowns which guaranteed an important bonus point.

The visitors were awarded a penalty try after Mike Melford had put in a huge cover tackle on the flying Jon Carter, only for the pace of Melford, the power of Sykes and a conversion from replacement Paddy Gill to put the gloss on a satisfactory afternoon for the city club.
