MICHAEL COLEMAN was a runaway winner of the Barretts Canterbury 10-mile road race on Sunday.

The 28-year-old Medway and Maidstone athlete led the 850-strong field home in 51 minutes 18 seconds, finishing more than four minutes clear of his nearest rival.

Coleman, from Dover, was using the race as part of his build-up to the London Marathon and stormed away from the start.

He went through the opening mile in just four-and-a-half minutes and by the three-mile mark was already 300 metres clear of Invicta East Ket's Phil Anthony, who went onto claim the runners-up spot for the second year running, in 55.29.

Coleman and Anthony both entered on the day, making them ineligible for prizes, so there was an unexpected bonus for 18-year-old Ashford AC member Lynton Lythgoe, who took the £75 top prize after coming third in 56.32.

Lythgoe's time was a new personal best by almost half-a-minute and the Deal youngster is now ranked as the fastest under-20 in the country over 10 miles.

Paddock Wood's Tina Oldershaw, 39, maintained her fine form by claiming the women's title in 63.11, 34 seconds clear of Kaeti Anne Mackenzie, from Barnsley.

Invicta's Annabelle Stearns was third in 63.49.
