Recalled Kent bowler Mitch Claydon says the squad are hopeful they can build on Friday’s T20 win when they travel to Gloucestershire in the Championship from Monday.

Claydon returns to the four-day fold at Bristol having missed last week’s dramatic draw against Glamorgan at Canterbury, which made it four games without a win to start the LV= County Championship Division 2 campaign.

Claydon said: “To pick up a win, not just our first win of the season, but our first in T20 is a big thing. We’ve got a good young squad, a lot of exciting players in that side and hopefully we can take this momentum on to Championship cricket and one-day cricket.

“To get your first win is handy, the mood is good.

“We’ve obviously been close to a win. We’ve had bad sessions and bad moments in games, but we’re not far away, we’re learning. We’re a young squad - though we can’t keep using that as an excuse - but we’re learning and hopefully we’re not far away.”

Claydon and Adam Riley were drafted into a 13-man squad, with spinner James Tredwell missing out with a side strain, though skipper Rob Key remains out, with Sam Northeast leading the side.

Gloucestershire are skippered by former Kent and England keeper Geraint Jones, but Claydon says the Ashes winner's knowledge of the Kent squad won’t necessarily provide the hosts with advantage.

He said: “Everyone nowadays, there’s enough footage and statistics out there that you can figure a player out. They’ll have all the footage on us but we’ll have it all on them too and hopefully we’ll just play the better cricket.”

Jones himself admitted: "It will be a bit odd, to be honest. This game has come around quite quickly. I remember looking at it in pre-season and thinking it will be a while before that happens and now here we are...

"I know how each of the guys are as individuals and as players. I'll be tapping into that knowledge on them to hopefully help us.

"I'm looking forward to it. It's going to be different. I have some good friends in that side, some guys I've played a lot of cricket with and young guys I've seen come through and develop.

"I'm sure there will be a bit of banter flying around. It will be good fun.

"Over the last couple of games I've seen steady improvement from them. Even though they're bottom I'm not taking that into account. They have some fantastic players.

"Matt Coles is bowling really well, Daniel Bell-Drummond has been doing really well - it's going to be a tight game. We are two evenly matched sides. It's going to be a good four days of cricket."

Jones spent 15 years at Kent and coach Jimmy Adams added: “Geraint was a fantastic servant of Kent Cricket and we were delighted to see him get the opportunity at Gloucestershire. He’s a fierce competitor so we expect a tough game at Bristol but the mood in our squad is positive.

“The performances have improved game on game and we hope to follow Friday’s win with a solid display in red-ball cricket.”

All-rounder Matt Coles added: “I think it’ll be a good game Looking at their side they have got a good team and we have a good team. It should be a good game of cricket to watch.”
