Canterbury captain Michael Farrer says his side want to shock the NOW: Pensions National Premier Division hierarchy and establish themselves in the push for the play-offs.

The city club moved off the bottom with a hard-fought 3-2 win over Wimbledon on Saturday night – a result that took them within two places and three points off a top-four berth.

Skipper Farrer said: “After six minutes when we were 2-0 down, all I was thinking was that I didn’t want it to end up like another East Grinstead game (Canterbury lost 9-1 to EGs at Polo Farm last month). It was a poor and worrying start but we settled after that and pulled one back before too long.

“We went in 2-1 down but we were comfortably on top and were confident we would go on to win and so it proved.”

The city club visit Notts side Beeston - who have won all four so far - on Sunday before hosting perennial big-guns Surbiton six days later.

Farrer said: “The way the league is going it looks like there are going to be a couple of leagues-within-a-league at the top and bottom. We want to make sure we’re in the top tier.

“We have Beeston and Surbiton in the next two games, both tough games against teams we’d consider our rivals, who also want to be in that top-four.

“People won’t expect us to go there and get anything at Beeston but we’ll be looking to cause an upset – it’s just important that we don’t start as slowly as we have in the past couple of games.”
