THE highlight of Kent’s season – Canterbury Cricket Week – is in line for an 11th hour re-vamp following Glamorgan’s qualification for the Twenty20 Cup finals at Edgbaston.

The Dragons were due at St Lawrence on August 8 for that Sunday’s totesport League match, but the day has also been reserved should the Twenty20 finals in Birmingham over-run into a second day.

Having sold over a dozen corporate hospitality packages, Kent’s chief executive Paul Millman is keen to bring some action to St Lawrence on ‘festival Sunday’, having already agreed to host Spitfires’ clash with the Dragons 24 hours later, on Monday August 9.

The club will announce further Cricket Week details as soon as arrangements with other parties are confirmed.

In the meantime, Mr Millman has responded to criticism of the club’s hosting of Twenty20 Cup games that lead to traffic congestion, long queues at catering outlets and disappointing attendances at all three home qualifiers.

Defending Kent’s strategy in the face of excellent facilities and glitz on offer at The Rose Bowl in Hampshire, Mr Millman said: “The whole issue surrounds investment budgets.

“Although it will remain confidential, I do know the budget available at the Rose Bowl for Twenty20 matches, whereas we at Kent had no budget available for the ‘bells and whistles’ that can surround Twenty20 hosting.

“We have one pot of money at Kent and at the moment that pot isn’t being used for investment marketing and ground repairs, it is being spent on players and strengthening our squad.

“I would be happy, indeed keen, to have money in place to for improving all sorts of facilities on our grounds but the finances preclude that at the moment.”
