KENT cricketers, past and present, joined forces to secure victory over Surrey in the annual Kersey-Kelleher memorial golf tournament. The event, held at Redlibbets Golf Club, was launched last year to honour Danny Kelleher and Graham Kersey who played county cricket for both clubs.

Former Kent batsman Simon Hinks, who had travelled up from Bristol, proposed a toast to Kelleher and Kersey while Surrey skipper Adam Hollioake spoke warmly about the talent and enthusiasm of the two men who, he said, had died far too young.

In the golf tornament, one player from each club played in a fourball completed by paying guests, with eight teams on either side. Kent's squad included David Fulton, James Hockley, Martin Saggers, Mark Ealham and Min Patel.

They were joined by Hinks, Martin McCague, Derek Underwood, Steve Marsh and former Kent batsman Trevor Ward, now with eicestershire.

Surrey's team featured Ian Ward, Adam Hollioake, Ed Giddins, Martin Bicknell, Ali Brown, Gareth Batty, Nadeem Shahid, Tony Pigott and ex player Darren Bicknell.

Kent retained their stranglehold on the trophy by outscoting Surrey, 830-784.

Steve Marsh's team, featuring Chris Turnbull, Steve Darlington and Bonze Billings, were the highest scorers, toalling 114, two more than Mark Ealham's quartet which included Harry Bright, Tommy Gunner and Peter Broughton.

A raffle and auction helped swell the proceeds, which will split between the two counties and put towards youth development.

The event was co-ordinated by former Kent spinner Richard Davis and Surrey's Jason Ratcliffe, who could not attend on the day due to the birth of his son, Samuel.
