CANTERBURY'S women had a mixed weekend, beating Olton and West Warwicks 4-1 in the Slazenger League on Saturday only to bow out of the HA Cup 2-0 at home to Hightown on Sunday.

Skipper Mel Clewlow gave them a third-minute lead against Olton and by half time Cathy Gilliat-Smith had doubled their advantage. Jen Wilson and Tash Brennan both added their names to the scoresheet in the second half before Denise Marston-Smith grabbed a late consolation.

The win left Canterbury in third, two points behind leaders Leicester at the mid-term break but their hopes of a league and cup double are over following a below-par showng agianst Hightown, who struck twice in the second half to seal victory.

But for keeper Becky Duggan Hightown would have gone ahead long before Nicky O'Donnell swept home Ashleigh Ball's cross in the 50th minute and there was no way back once Sally Walton had doubled Hightown's advantage on the hour.

Canterbury struggled to create any openings with Kirsty Chambers going closest to a goal when she shot wide in the first half.
