Fast bowler Wes Agar leaves Kent to return to Australia due to shoulder injury - but is expected to make Canterbury comeback in 2025

Sidelined Australian overseas fast bowler Wes Agar has left Kent to return home - but has already committed for a third club stint in 2025.

Agar hasn’t featured for Kent since he injured his shoulder in late May during their County Championship Division 1 heavy defeat at home to Essex.

He batted in the first innings - getting a six-ball duck - but not in the second as they were beaten by an innings and 96 runs.

While Agar’s departure is a big blow to Kent’s 2024 hopes, he will be returning next season on an all-format deal from April until the end of July, subject to regulatory approval.

Agar said: “I’m thrilled to be coming back to my ‘home away from home’ again next year.

“I feel fully part of the Kent Cricket family now. It’s a great club full of great people, on and off the field, and the decision to sign on again for another English summer was an easy one to make.

“I can’t wait to pull on that Kent shirt again and perform in front of our members and supporters in 2025.

“I’m gutted to be leaving the lads early this time and I’ve absolutely loved my time in Canterbury this year. See you all in April!”

The 27-year-old has taken 40 wickets in 16 appearances for the county across both first-class and T20 cricket.

Agar, who first joined Kent last April, will feature for South Australia in the 2024/25 Sheffield Shield and has signed for Sydney Thunder ahead of T20 Big Bash League, where he will be joined by Spitfires’ T20 skipper Sam Billings.

“Wes is a talented multi-format cricketer and a very popular member of our dressing room - we’re extremely pleased that he will be joining us again next summer,” said director of cricket Simon Cook.

“His ethos and work ethic is great to have around the place and we’re looking forward to him being an important part of our attack at the front-end of our 2025 season.

“It’s sad to see him leave early with his shoulder injury - but we know that he will come back with the same enthusiasm to perform at his best in a Kent shirt.”

South African all-rounder Beyers Swanepoel, another of Kent’s overseas players this year, missed their last two T20 games due to illness.
