It means Crawley will miss out against Sri Lanka, with the first Test taking place at Old Trafford from August 21.

Surrey’s Dan Lawrence is expected to come into the side as opener with former Kent man Jordan Cox - who left the county to join Essex at the end of last season - called into the England Test squad for the first time. He has been involved in the England set-up previously, having toured Pakistan with the England white-ball squad in the autumn of 2022.

It means another former Kent man, Ollie Robinson, has again been overlooked by his country.

Crawley made 76 at Lord’s in the first Test against the West Indies but followed that up with scores of 0, 3 and 18. He has played 47 Test matches for England, scoring four centuries with an average of 32.23.

England will play three Test against Sri Lanka, with further games at Lord’s (August 29) and The Oval (September 6). Crawley will hope to return to fitness ahead of a three-Test tour of Pakistan in October.

England Test squad: Ben Stokes (Durham) captain, Gus Atkinson (Surrey), Shoaib Bashir (Somerset), Harry Brook (Yorkshire), Jordan Cox (Essex), Ben Duckett (Nottinghamshire), Dan Lawrence (Surrey), Ollie Pope (Surrey), Matthew Potts (Durham), Joe Root (Yorkshire), Jamie Smith (Surrey), Olly Stone (Nottinghamshire), Chris Woakes (Warwickshire), Mark Wood (Durham).
