Kent moved off the bottom of the LV= County Championship Division 2 table after completing an eight-wicket win at Leicestershire on Tuesday.

A low-scoring affair on a green wicket was always going to produce a swift result, and so it proved with skipper Sam Northeast helping his side complete the win after an early lunch on day three.

Matt Coles' match figures of 10-94 were his best in first-class cricket as he twice ripped through the home batting line-up.

After Northeast won the toss, Leicestershire were out for just 159 as Coles took 6-55 despite a second-wicket stand of 58 from Angus Robson and Ned Eckersley which helped them reach lunch at the relative safety of 109-4.

However, Kent bowled with more accuracy after the break and took the final six wickets for just 50 runs.

Andrea Agathangelou edged an attempted cut off Darren Stevens to Adam Ball at first slip.

Aadil Ali edged to Coles at second slip and Lewis Hill and Clint McKay gave off-side catches to Sam Northeast and Joe Denly respectively.

Ben Raine was bowled by Coles, and Ollie Freckingham top-edged an attempted hook off Calum Haggett to leave Leicestershire all out for 159.

Kent lost Denly and Daniel Bell-Drummond before the close but resumed at 44-2 on Monday.

Rob Key, Northeast and Ben Harmison all went cheaply but Stevens' attacking approach paid off against his former county.

Stevens took the attack to Leicestershire in spectacular style, hitting ten fours before going to his fifty in just 48 balls with a beautifully timed six over mid-wicket.

Adam Ball (32) and Haggett put on 60 for the eighth wicket as Kent established a crucial lead of 51.

Coles struck twice when the Leicestershire second innings began, trapping Matt Boyce on the crease and removing Greg Smith for his second duck of the contest.

After tea three wickets fell without addition to the score as Stevens picked up Eckersley leg before with a ball that stayed low, but Ben Raine battled on to ensure the match would go into a third day.

Leicestershire were 110-9 overnight and Raine (41 not out) and Charlie Shreck took the score to 123 before Coles bowled the latter for one.

Needing just 73 to win on, Kent adopted an aggressive approach which caused the demise of Bell-Drummond and Key.

Denly prospered, however, with 37 not out off 48 balls, and in company with Northeast, who hit 28 off 25 balls, saw the visitors home shortly after lunch.
