KENT'S weakened bowling attack made hard work of polishing off the students of Cardiff University despite winning their three-day friendly in Canterbury by an innings and 10 runs.
Having amassed 443 for six courtesy of hundreds from Neil Dexter and Matt Walker and half-centuries by Joe Denly and Darren Stevens, Kent needed the best part of two days to dismiss the part-timers twice over for 171 and then 262.
Hampered by the loss of Martin Saggers to a hamstring injury and neck spasms that also kept Min Patel on the sidelines, it was left to Kolpak signing Ryan McLaren to eventually complete the win with a return of six for 59.
He included Cardiff University CCE skipper Richard Kaufman in his haul, the mature student who plays minor counties cricket fro Oxfordshire, scored an excellent 95 in his side's second innings before edging an attempted run down to James Tredwell at second slip.
Robbie Joseph also claimed two second innings wickets and five in the game in total, but in truth, Kent's bowling lacked penetration and on this performance they may struggle to bowl out county sides twice.
Thankfully, overseas professional Andrew Hall flies in on Monday to bolster the seam department following South Africa's elimination from the World Cup.
Kent are next in action on Sunday in their second Friends Provident Trophy qualifier against Ireland in Belfast.
Scores: Kent 443-6 declared. Cardiff UCCE 171 and 262. Kent win by an innings and 10 runs.
