Kent captain Rob Key has dropped himself - after just three matches.

Key, who is in his second spell as Kent skipper, has struggled for form in the county's three winless County Championship matches.

He opted to step down from first-team action for the four-day game with Glamorgan which got under way at The Spitfire Ground, St Lawrence on Sunday.

Head coach Jimmy Adams said: "Rob has elected to spend some time away from first-team cricket in order to focus on his batting.

"The team showed more consistency and character in the second half of the last game and we will be aiming to maintain and improve on this for this home fixture against Glamorgan."

Key has averaged just 14 from six innings to date with a top score of 34 against Lancashire at Old Trafford. he made eight and seven against Leicestershire in the drawn match at Canterbury last week.

Key's place was taken by Fabian Cowdrey while Calum Haggett and James Tredwell also featured in the Kent side, at the expense of Mitch Claydon and Adam Riley.

Vice-captain Sam Northeast skippered the side in the absence of Key, who turns 36 on Tuesday.
