Skipper Robert Key missed out on a hundred as England Lions made 473-5 declared against New Zealand A on the second day of their four-day game in Queenstown.
Key's first wicket stand of 130 was ended in the second over of the day when Steven Moore of Worcestershire went for 43, and he followed 10 runs later for 90.
However centuries for Warwickshire's Jonathan Trott (138 not out) and Samit Patel of Nottinghamshire (101) helped England make good progress, before Key declared.
Brett Arnel, who plays Kent League cricket for Beckenham, took the wickets of Moore and Patel to finish with 2-56 in 27 overs.
New Zealand A were 22-1 off seven overs at the close with Robbie Joseph conceding 14 runs off his opening three overs.
Joe Denly wasn't selected for the game, after suffering a finger injury in training last week.
